Committed over the past 5 years to promoting and disseminating artist’s books, LENDROIT gallery suggests an editorial project paying tribute to the use of books as an artistic medium.
We wish that this project reveal (subjunctive) the artist’s book as a full medium for experimentation and artistic achievement.

The call of the West
A creative journey through the USA

These are the creative minds that roll back new horizons. The quest for what has never been thought or seen before spurs on the pioneers of innovation. In a world preoccupied with economic crises and sovereign debts, these restless spirits see global challenges as the springboard to jump off into the new. Along the New York – Chicago – Los Angeles axis are centres of the American creative industries that are fully aware of their weighty responsibility for a better world. In GOWEST! editor and lifestyle expert Patrice Farameh profiles sixty outstanding new creatives on this vibrant scene – showcasing them both in pictures and in their own words. The Advertising section focuses both on traditional firms such as Young & Rubicam and on newcomers such as King & Partners or the Deutsch agency which created ‘The Force’ for Volkswagen, a campaign that scored a lasting sensation.<

This 384-page lavishly-illustrated book is all about this creative vanguard. Their innovative angles take a proactive approach to crossovers between advertising, architecture, art, design, fashion and photography. Artists like Terence Koh – of whom Lady Gaga said after a recent joint project, “When I’m around Terence I just want to poop out art ideas nonstop” (ArtForum) – cannot be confined to a single category. They think globally, and the world is the stage they move on. Swedish-born Thomas Meyerhoffer revolutionised surfing design in California, and Karim Rashid, who grew up in Canada, went on to a breathtaking career as a designer in New York. To this day New York is the heartland of American fashion design, though top labels like Christian Siriano or Prabal Gurung are feeling the competition from Los Angeles in the revealing clothes of Brian Lichtenberg. And all of the creative arts merge in a persuasive symbiosis in the medium of photography. Here it’s the work of women such as Holly Andres, Sara Vanderbeek and Shirin Neshat that is making the running.

The creativity in this sumptuous compendium is also present in the fresh and attractive layout of the book itself, created by Meiré and Meiré. Andrea Diaz, whose background is in music, has realised the concept so deftly that the form of the book matches up to its theme. Till the very last page it is a thrilling publication brimful of vitality and creativity. So, go west and prepare for a revelation!

THESE ARE THE ARTISTS TO KEEP AN EYE ON!

They are young, inspiring and challenging. They are surprising and convincing. And they are unmistakable. For all that, the 100 young artist personalities showcased in Daab’s new book project, Rising, do have something in common: their work is already firing great hopes that they’ll occupy commanding positions in the art scene.
Be it admitted from the start: this is of course a subjective choice. But the question has to be: can any small selection from the diverse young art world be objective? Of course not! So the editorial board of this project quite deliberately embraced the difficulty in making its choices. And a good job too, because the contestable process resulted in an unusual book.

Editor Olaf Salié and the selection board are all intimately familiar with the vast spectrum of contemporary art. The team consists of Alexandra Wendorf, editor-in-chief of Junge Kunst; gallery owners Dr. Rupert Pfab and Thomas Rehbein; collector Dr. Thomas Rusche; businessman and co-founder of Kirschpflücker e.V. Fritz Conzen; artist, designer and curator Mike Meiré; and Gérard Goodrow, former director of Art Cologne. The last-named is also one of the team of authors, which also includes art historians Rebecca Maria Jäger, Thomas W. Kuhn, Sabine Elsa Müller and Julia Ritterskamp. The editorial and organisational coordination was managed by experienced Cologne editor Christiane Blass. All of them contributed their knowledge and judgement skills to the project.

The result is a compendium of personalities and positions, across the spectrum of artistic disciplines – all of which one should literally keep an eye on. All of these young national and international artists have a connection with Germany. Their will to make, their seriousness, and the exciting, relevant work they have created, merit attention and critical commentary. There are very young artists among them, who have not yet graduated from their academies, as well as others who are already achieving success in the art world. The team who worked on this book felt this range was important in order to display the full range, relate different positions to each other, and in the process survey the current art scene as revealingly as possible. This publication is a watchlist, essential for art lovers, collectors, gallery owners and curators. Uninfluenced by hype, it blazes a trail through the lively, fascinating, and virtually impenetrable world of young artists on the fringe of the established art scene. In alphabetical order, the book presents highly impressive personalities whose work covers a broad spectrum of the visual arts. Whether abstract or figurative, colourful or monochrome, stimulating, impulsive, provocative or wistful, they all open up new perspectives to the beholder. Mike Meiré’s understated design gives the works
the space they need to make this entrance into the world of new artists a sheer pleasure.

Title: Ein Hungerkünstler
Graphically designed by : Jürgen Schlotter
Distributed: Zeixs
On Sale: 2012
Format: 120 x 225 mm
Pages: 56
Features: Linen with Embossment
Price: 30,80 EUR

Graphic designer Jürgen Schlotter transforms Franz Kafka’s story, published in 1922, in an extraordinary way. Typography and illustration merge into one, creating a unique visual interpretation and representation of the text.

Kafka’s Ein Hungerkünstler is a parable about the self-made isolation of an artist from his readership, meaning that his true nature remains misunderstood. The typography used in this edition for book-lovers – 26 letters as well as puntuation marks – was carved from linocuts and then digitalised so that the rough, chiseled, brittle lettering creates a palpable sense of the protagonist’s inner turmoil.

Schlotter’s unconventional interpretation of Kafka’s story has already won several prizes: the Red Dot Award, ADC (Art Director’s Club) and the Vida Paper Award.

Title: Futuristic – Visions of Future Living

On Sale: 2012
Format: 24 x 28 cm

The World of Tomorrow
Visions of Life in the Future

The world is changing rapidly, and the impact is felt especially in the space we live in – both positively and negatively. Globalization, population growth and climate change are cause for anxiety. The responses of
politicians are half-hearted compromises, and many changes are already irreversible. But a quite different
profession is reacting faster, more cogently and with greater courage to the challenges: the architects of the future. They are evolving impressive visions, seeking innovative solutions, and providing sources of hope for the world of tomorrow. Their experimental designs confront the ongoing challenges and consider the options for technological development from a variety of angles.

The designs by 53 architectural bureaus showcased in DAAB’s new publication FUTURISTIC are arresting
and convincing in their futuristic form-giving and visionary power. In the chapters ‘Urban’, ‘Towers’, ‘Atmosphere’, ‘Green’, ‘Water’ and ‘Bionic’, globally celebrated architectural bureaus such as FOSTER + PARTNERS, BIG, MAD, J. MAYER H. ARCHITEKTEN and others reveal new perspectives: in the cities of the future, vegetative high-rises will grow out of the ground, be nourished by photosynthesis, and supply occupants with fresh air. Architectural structures spanning entire cities will rationalize conurbations, and on the few urban freeways, embedded in jungle zones, road-users will be transported by a system of computerized electrical vehicles. Those whose habitats have been submerged under the seas will live in settlements on or under the water. Space is included in these designs too – the old dream of living on the moon has life in it still…

FUTURISTIC impressively shows that the models for a world that revolutionizes our concepts of living already exist. The virtual designs are accompanied by commentaries by Professor Stefanie Lieb, historian of architecture, and by outstanding essays from Florian Heilmeyer, Winka Dubbeldam, J. Mayer H., Christoph Ingenhoven, Philippe Rahm, Dickson Despommier, Caroline Klein, Alberto T. Estévez, Mitchell Joaquim and Maria Aiolova, and Luca Molinari, and the message they all send together is a positive one: despite all the adverse factors, the world of tomorrow will still be one worth living in. The architects are achieving the impossible – creating a space for utopia.
