Avec Perdre le nord, Jochen Gerner nous offre une nouvelle occasion de découvrir son travail, unique, qui joint avec impertinence les deux bouts de la bande-dessinée et de l’art contemporain.

Pour un homme du Nord, arpenter les terres du Sud se révèle parfois être une expérience déconcertante. Et pour des dessins ? Pourrait-on imaginer que le mistral, le soleil de plomb, les embruns… brouillent leurs repères et altèrent leur orientation ? Jochen Gerner tente l’expérience avec une série d’images réalisées pour cette nouvelle exposition au Studio. Tel un géologue des territoires graphiques, il poursuit à travers elles la démarche d’observation et de manipulation du matériau imprimé que lui octroie l’histoire de la bande-dessinée, l’affiche de cinéma ou la production cartographique à destination des écoliers.

Jochen Gerner recouvre la surface du papier, mais c’est un authentique processus de dévoilement qu’il met en place, une vertigineuse entreprise de détournement des codes esthétiques ou symboliques de la chose imprimée qui offre au lecteur/spectateur une possibilité nouvelle de lire l’image et de l’articuler au texte qui l’accompagne.

Jochen Gerner vit et travaille à Nancy, où il fut diplômé de l’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Dessins de presse (Le Monde, Libération, Télérama, New York Times), bande-dessinée (avec en particulier de nombreux titres chez L’Association), illustration, expositions personnelles (MUDAM, Musée de l’image d’Épinal, galerie Anne Barrault), décors d’opéra… sa démarche polymorphe enjambe allègrement les frontières et annule les hiérarchies établies, passant de la Fiac aux rayons jeunesse des librairies avec une enthousiasmante facilité.
